2006 South Kaibab/Tonto/Bright Angel

The South Kaibab trailhead is located east of the Grand Canyon Village. To get there, you can ride a shuttle, or you can get dropped off near but not at the trailhead.

Hiking down the South Kaibab, west along the Tonto, and back out along the Bright Angel is a strenuous hike covering about 13 miles and taking you down and then up 3,000 feet in elevation. It is about as much of a hike as one can realistically do in one day.

The group, dropped off at the closest point private automobiles can get, about 1/4 mile from the trailhead.

There had been a fairly heavy snowfall the previous week, and we saw more snow in the canyon than we had during any of our previous visits.

When does the fun part start?

Having made it the approximately 9 miles from the rim to Indian Garden, Kim does not want to hear that a 3.5 mile, all-uphill hike to the rim remains.
